High intensity interval training, or HIIT, is a method of exercise that relies on all out bursts of movement followed by a rest period. For example, an individual wanting to perform HIIT training incorporating running could use 30 seconds to 1 minute of full effort sprints. After this time period expires, we want to walk or jog at a light pace to keep the heart rate lowered. Follow this relaxation period with another full effort sprint phase and repeat the process 5 to 10 times.
This style of interval training provides a multitude of benefits in a relatively short period of exercise. “High intensity interval training: A little pain for a lot of gain?” says Martin J. Gibala and Sean L. McGee in their article pertaining to the subject.
Why Use HIIT?
High intensity training of this caliber is suited for the individual that wants to get the same benefits, or even more so, from their training in less time. Simply put, if your time is precious you’ll want to use a form of HIIT.
Another leading reason that this style of training is so commonly used is based on the customization factor. HIIT training is not a ‘cookie cutter’ style of exercise in that the users can substitute any exercise they wish into the interval scheme. Some users like to perform full effort jump rope followed by walking in place. Others have used burpees followed by light walking. And even some Crossfit gyms like to use interval hammer smashing followed by periods of rest.
The standard idea of running for an hour or so has often led to decreased testosterone in long term users. However, with new studies coming out about high intensity interval training, we can now see higher levels of testosterone in individuals who use this method. Not only will an individual enjoy the short period of cardio training but they will also experience greater benefits over their steady-state cardio counterpart.
Testosterone is a vital hormone in both men and women that helps regulate sexual drive, appetite, musculature and fat loss. With an elevated level of testosterone we can experience more benefits in our health and our sex drives in the grand scheme. HIIT training allows a user to use their creativity and develop a system of training catered to their needs and overall goals.
